Night Surfing, Anyone?

I'm sorry for being absent. I've been sick and I got really behind on preparation for the launch. I'm still not 100% better, but the show must go on.

I was just thinking about this night surfing video and decided to share it. I think this is a beautiful short and it takes my breath away every time.

I'll probably still be pretty much a ghost until after our launch next week, but I'm sure you can all live without me. 

Design Crush: Office Decor and the Single Girl

I was watching Sex and the Single Girl last weekend and I fell in love with the lead female character's office. It's simple black and white, but the furniture structure takes a classic decorating technique to the next level. When I have my own office one day, it's going to look almost exactly like this.

Harry Potter Quote Typography

In regards to Harry Potter, I'm currently somewhere between mourning the loss of my childhood after the last film and finally joining the Pottermore community. Yes, I haven't done the whole Pottermore thing yet, but that's because I've been busy and I know it will be a huge distraction. It's the same reason I don't sign up for games on Facebook.

Anyway, I saw this typography art on Tumblr and, after some digging (why can't people just give credit?!), I discovered they were created by Priscilla of The Readables. Her blog is really great and I love the way she vlogs book reviews.

Feather has started getting books in to review and we're looking for a books writer, so I think I've just got books on the brain right now.

Fashion Envy: Lauren Bacall in "How to Marry a Millionaire"

When I have what Holly Golightly would call "the means reds," I watch How to Marry a Millionaire. Lauren Bacall look absolutely flawless in the film, especially the wedding scene. I also included some screenshots with Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe, who were also dressed to kill.

Friday Faves

What is free time, exactly? I'm starting to forget. I had some for a month and I hated it, but when I don't have it I want it back. The grass is always greener on the other side.

When I got back from Miami, I hit the ground running with magazine stuff (which I also worked on during my vacation) because Ruffled Feathers launched Monday and we're working on our first month of stories. Because I have no time, I went to the gym at 1:15 a.m. The security guard probably thinks I have insomnia or something. Oh, and I have a desk job, so I did that, too.

These are some things that made my week a little easier.

Accurate Disney Princess Representations

I love the Disney Princesses. I went to Disney World a couple of years ago and practically attacked Princess Tiana. Then I praised the performer for how awesome her character is. It was not my most mature moment. But I'm ashamed of nothing.

When I saw these representations of what the costumes would look like if Disney didn't just gloss over costume design in their animation, I went back to my short days as a costume design minor in college. The artist looked for clues in the films and historical information to figure out the time periods, so she could create looks that are more realistic.

I did some digging and the artist is Claire Hummel. She's a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and officially one of my favorite people.

Films of the Week: Last Week

I got really caught up with the holiday weekend and wasn't able to post this on Saturday as usual. I meant to schedule it, but there just wasn't time. Oh, well. I'm still Miami, but we're resting at the hotel, so I decided to write this post.

I watched a lot of films last week that I always wanted to see, but hadn't gotten the chance to yet. It was a really good week of film watching.

Friends with Benefits was much better than No Strings Attached because
it focused just as much on the comedy as the romance. The plot also gave
the main characters more depth.

Broken Hll is the typical story of boy meets girl,
girl rejects boy, girl gets boy in legal trouble and
they start a choir at a prison for their community
service project and to help boy get into music
college. It was entertaining enough to do while
I went through pitches.

Of course, I've seen The September Issue. I saw it in theaters and then I
bought it, but it's different watching it after you start a magazine. I'm not
as scary as Anna, but I hope to one day be anywhere near as good.

Prom was so cute it was almost painful, but they slipped in a bad boy story
line to even it all out. Of course, he's really just misunderstood and needs
someone to believe in him. The school's golden girl perhaps?

Interview with the Vampire has been on my Netflix queue for a while, but
I kept holding off on watching until last week. I love how tortured Brad Pitt's
character is by his decision and how delightfully evil both Tom Cruise and
Kirsten Dunst's characters are. It also ended perfectly and I'm so glad they
didn't have a sequel.  

I love Meryl Streep, so I watched Heartburn. It's about a woman who marries
a notorious womanizer and finds out he's cheating when she's pregnant
with their second child. She takes him back, but can't seem to get over his
infidelity.

Muppet Spirit Hoods & Nail Polish? OK!

I was just browsing Refinery29 when I came across the cutest thing ever! Spirit Hoods is making Muppet-themed hoods! Sorry for all the exclamation marks, but I'm elated. There are hoods for fans of Miss Piggy, Kermit, Gonzo and Animal! The hoods coincide with the huge public relations push they're making for the upcoming film co-starring Jason Segal and Amy Adams.

The craziest thing about seeing the Spirit Hoods this afternoon is that I received an email from the Entertainment Editor of Feather this morning about Muppet OPI nail polish she spotted on Racked.com. The polish will be a part of their holiday collection.

Can you guess which one is called Fresh Frog of Bel-Air?

 It's obvious Disney is hoping this will relaunch the franchise after buying the characters in 2004 and basically letting them collect dust in some warehouse or something before they decided on this film. The polish will be priced at $8.50. I haven't seen the hoods up on the site yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll have to take out a loan to afford them.

It's no secret that I'm love with The Muppets, but I'm definitely not the only twenty-something who still loves them. One of my children's literature professors showed a clip of Muppet Treasure Island in class after we read Treasure Island and the entire class begged her to play another clip.

Guess what? The hoods aren't just for kids!

Hello? I forgot my mantra.

I saw this Annie Hall print on Katie Amour's site and went immediately to the Etsy shop where she found them. It's one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. If I could just have this one, I'd be content, but all of them would make me overjoyed. I have a  feeling my bank account may be a decreasing pretty soon and one of these will be in my house.

Films of the Week

I spent so much time watching The Tudors that film inadvertently took a backseat. I'm so surprised at myself. I did watch two films, one in the early hours of the morning when I should have been asleep.

I've seen Strictly Sexual before. It's surprisingly a very deep film about two
 women who invite out-of-work construction workers to live with them
in exchange for sex. Somehow, it's not raunchy, which is a turn-off for me
with films. I tried to watch the series on Hulu, but it just wasn't working. The
acting in the film isn't amazing by any means, but it's
Oscar-worthy compared to the series.

What Dreams May Come is a total tear-jerker, but it's so creative and
the entire concept of Heaven is composed well on film. The story is
about a couple who lose their children in a car accident and the husband
dies in a car accident a few years later. When his wife commits
suicide, he goes to Hell to find her. I saw bits of pieces of it before,
but seeing the entire thing really brought it out in a new light.
This is definitely on my list of favorites now.

Movie Scene: Office Space

No time to blog today. I had so much going on with Feather, but it's all coming together! Yay!

I was thinking of this scene from Office Space today because it's hilarious. I know a lot of people at jobs they hate who would love to do this to their printer because it's a symbol of how much they hate their office. I'm glad to not be one of them.

I'll try to blog tomorrow.

Films of the Week

Apparently, I was in the mood for family dramas this week. It seems to be a running theme of the films I watched.

A cute first-love story with a young Reese
Witherspoon. There's also a lot of family drama.

A man tries to adapt to his teenage son coming out
of the closet, his father-in-law moving in and
sexual tension with a co-worker. It doesn't
make me want to have a lot of grown-up
responsibility any time soon, but it's good.

I wish was as lively as hers. I don't really have to explain this one, do I?

There are so many handsome men in this film that I could barely follow
the plot. But it was an OK film. The shooting was a little amateur, though.

Friday Five

In an effort to post more frequently, I'm going to post five of my favorite things right now every week.

My gold graduation shoes from Lulu's.

After four long and grueling years, I'm finally graduating from college tomorrow. I'm not one for a lot of people coming to my events, so it worked out well that only my immediate family will be able to come. Even with a smaller crowd, I can't go out without a little style. More importantly, a little personal style.

I used to have a pair of sequined gold ballet shoes from Old Navy in high school, but I accidentally left them in a hotel room in Tennessee, along with my favorite denim jacket (I've never found one I loved as much), so I chose to give myself a blast from the past that reflects who I am now.

Everyone always called them Dorothy shoes. As a fun fact, in the two major motion picture adaptations of the Wizard of Oz, she never wears gold shoes. In the 1939 eponymous film version, Judy Garland wore red shoes because they wanted to show the wonders of Technicolor and in The Wiz Diana Ross wears silver shoes like Dorothy did in the original text.

No Name Slob

Jacket: LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's; Dress & Shoes: Gifted

I took a quick picture before I went to dinner with some friends tonight. I wore this bubble dress to a joint recognition-lecture ceremony with a crochet bolero last week, but I remixed it for this with a tip from Lauren Conrad--adding a motorcycle jacket to give edge to a sweet look. Ironically, the motorcycle jacket is from her line for Kohl's. It's pretty lightweight, which is perfect for a summer in the South. I wore my hair like Lori Loughlin from her Full House days to add a little extra edge.

By the way, do you love the shoes? I had a pair of Mary Janes that broke and, because she knows my love for that particular design, bought them for me as a birthday gift. They get nothing but compliments.

The better part of my morning was spent writing and the afternoon was spent hanging out with my friend Stephanie as she wasted time while her car was being serviced. After she spent a ridiculous amount of money on three items of clothing from Ross, we went to PetSmart and I got a fish! I wasn't sure what to name him at first, but I settled on Fish. I love Breakfast at Tiffany's, so I took the idea from the name of her cat--Cat. The title to this post is also an ode to the film.

He came in a little cup and I carried him around with
me on errands until I got home.

I made a nice little home for him between my Lauren
Conrad books and Paris travel guides. And, yes,
his fish bowl is shaped like a Brandy glass.
